AN ATTRACTIVELY BOUND COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION of this important scientific voyage undertaken by Le Gentil to observe the transit of Venus but also including accounts of ancient Indian practices and astronomy. The 1761 transit of Venus across the Sun was observed at 120 different locations around the world by scientific teams all vying to be first to determine the exact distance of the Sun from the Earth. The most advantageous geographical positions for this were in India and the East Indies, near the Equator, and Siberia, farthest from the Equator. Le Gentil's observations were to be made at the French colony of Pondicherry but before he could complete his work, the colony was captured by the English and he was forced to retreat, passing the next ten years in Madagascar, Îles Bourbon and the Philippines. Part III comprises a most valuable account of the Philippine Islands at the end of the eighteenth century. Few significantly accurate scientific results were obtained by Le Gentil's observations of Venus, or by Chappe d'Auteroche who led Catherine II of Russia's expedition to Siberia the same year. For the 1769 transit of Venus, Le Gentil hoped to make observations from the Philippines, Chappe d'Auteroche made them from Baja California, Mexico, and James Cook made them from Tahiti.
