Little is known of James Hunter who served in the Royal Artillery under Marquis Cornwallis during the Third Mysore war,1790-92. He died in India in 1792. He made numerous sketches of Bangalore and Seringapatam and other places in southern India mostly concerned with the course of the campaigns. The great fortress of Vellore on the river Palar is on the direct route from Madras up to Bangalore.
