Hand-coloured double-page wood engraved map, showing mountain-ranges, towns, with two sea-monsters, plate size: 275 x 350mm. The first map of the continent of Asia by one of the most important mapmakers of the 16th century, first published in Münster's Latin edition of Ptolemy's Geographia of 1542. The map depicts a large number of islands, but omits Japan, as it was based on Marco Polo's reports of an archipelago of 7448 islands, at a time when Japan was thought to be further east.
