FIRST EDITION. J. C. Rappard's views of colonial life and architecture enjoyed 'considerable popularity' (Bastin-Bromer, Indonesia, p. 46). Rappard, an army officer, spent much of his life in the Dutch East Indies where he lived between 1842 and 1872.
