Tenuta dell' Ornellaia was one of the pioneers in Italy for planting the Bordeaux grape varieties and Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot dominate the plantings in their Tuscan estate. Ornellaia is a Cabernet Sauvignon dominated blend, whereas Masseto is Merlot. The Tenuta dell' Ornellaia is located in the Bolgheri DOC region in Tuscany and as well producing their Super Tuscan stellar wines are well known for the production of Le Volte, Le Serre Nuove dell 'Ornellaia (Ornellaia's second wine) and also one of Tuscany's best white wines, the Poggio alle Gazze. Tenuta dell' Ornellaia estate was founded in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori in the Maremma region of Tuscany, working alongside the great Californian winemaker, Professor Andri Tchelistcheff. Following a period under the influence of Robert Mondavi, the estate came under the ownership of Marchesi de Frescobaldi in 2005. In the capable hands of winemaker Thomas Duroux and consultant Michel Rolland, the estate continues its long-standing, stellar record of world-class wine production. The Tenuta dell'Ornellaia estate has two main vineyards in Tuscany; Ornellaia (which also houses the winery) and most recently at Bellaria. The estate has 91 hectares of vines; Cabernet Sauvignon (43 hectares), Cabernet Franc (7 hectares), Merlot (33 hectares), and Petit Verdot (8 hectares). Ornellaia which was first produced in 1985 is the estate's signature wine and is made from a typical Bordeaux blend; Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc. (Generally in proportions of 65 30 and 5 Among the awards that have been achieved by Ornellaia are being awarded Wine of the Year in 2001 by the Wine Spectator for the 1998 vintage and its was officially recognized in 1994 as having its own DOC status. Aromas and flavours often mentioned are blackcurrants, redcurrants forest berries, rosemary, and cherries with a hint of minerality. Le Serre Nuove was first produced in 1997 and can be considered the second wine of Ornellaia. In 1997 the equivalent of 30,000 bottles which could have been bottled as Ornellaia were actually bottled as Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia. Ever since then, this wine has followed the logic of the 'second vin' of Bordeaux. It is made primarily from grapes of younger vines. The 2003 vintage was blended from; Cabernet Sauvignon 60 Merlot 30 Cabernet Franc 5 Petit Verdot 5 Masseto was first produced in 1987 from Merlot grapes from the Masseto vineyard. It is 100 Merlot, and is aged for 24 months in oak barriques, followed by a further 12 months in the bottle before being released. Masseto has often been compared to the great wines of Pomerol. The wine is characterized by aromas of red cherry, black plum, with hints of chocolate and flavors of licorice and rich black fruit. In Le Volte, Sangiovese is blended with the classic red grape varieties of Bordeaux. The blend is Sangiovese (50 Cabernet Sauvignon (15 - 25 and Merlot (25 -35. Le Volte was first produced in 1991, in the modern style, ready for consumption upon release.
