This estate is a high quality producer of Sangiovese based Chianti Classicos, and the estate also produces a Merlot based wine, La Ricolma. The most famous and prestigious wine from the estate is the Percarlo IGT vinified from 100 Sangiovese grapes. San Giusto a Rentennano's Chianti Classico is a blend of 95 Sangiovese and 5 Canaiolo grapes. The wine is aged in medium sized casks and oak Tonneaux for about 10-12 months, with occasional racking. It is then aged in the bottle for between 4 and 5 months before being released. Le Baroncole Chianti Classico is made from 97 Sangiovese and 3 Canaiolo grapes. The initial stages of its production are the same as for their Chianti Classico. It is then aged in French oak barriques for between 16 and 20 months, depending on the vintage. It is bottled unfiltered and aged in the bottle for a further six months, before release. Le Baroncole has the potential to age for a considerable length of time. Percarlo IGT is made from 100 Sangiovese grapes, selected from 6 specific areas in the vineyards, which have extremely low yields. In order to achieve such a rich and complex wine the grapes are generally left to mature beyond the normal degree of ripeness. Percarlo is then aged in French oak barriques for between 20 and 22 months, bottled unfiltered and then remains in the bottle for a further 6 months before being released. Vin San Giusto is a sweet wine, made from 90 Malvasia and 10 Trebbiano grapes. The grapes are dried on racks in a well ventilated room for approximately 130 days. After the grapes are pressed, the must is placed in small chestnut barrels, (40 to 180 litres). The barrels are placed in lofts and the wine ferments and develops slowly over a six year period, during which time 50 evaporates. This accounts for its extraordinary concentration. Before bottling, the wine is filtered through Holland cloth. La Ricolma is made from 100 Merlot grapes, fermented in stainless steel tanks for about 14 days, then racked and pressed. After it is racked once again, the wine is left to mature for 20-22 months in French oak barriques. It is bottled unfiltered and remains in the bottle for another 6 months before being released.

Percarlo--Vintage 1997
Tuscany. San Guisto a Rentannano
Tasting Note: The dense ruby/purple-coloured 1997 Percarlo is compelling. Enormous in aromas, flavours, and persistence on the palate, it exhibits profound levels of concentration as well as unbelievably dense, black currant, blackberry liqueur notes infused with new saddle leather, liquorice, truffles, and toasty oak. Enormously thick and viscous, with low acidity, and mouthcoating levels of extract, this wine's tannin level is high, but largely obscured by the wealth of fruit, glycerin, and extract. It is an amazing accomplishment! Anticipated maturity: now-2020. 98 Points.Robert Parker, Wine Advocate 130 (Aug 2000). See also lot 326
