According to Suckling the best 2001 Tuscan wine that he tasted was the 2001 Tenuta dell 'Ornellaia Masseto, which he awarded a perfect 100 points. In 2001 there were some adverse weather conditions in Tuscany. There were severe frosts in April, although the best vineyards located on the slopes managed to avoid major damage. However the frosts meant that yields were down by as much as 40 in some areas. The summer period as a whole was changeable - with a largely dry June and July, however by August and September the weather became erratic, varying from hot to cool, and humid to dry. In the last week of September there was a severe downpour. Despite the variable weather the leading Tuscan producers managed to produce some spectacular wines with some experts making comparisons with the stunning 1997s. The most successful Tuscan area was Bolgheri (the home of Sassicaia and Ornellaia) Renzo Cotarella, technical director for Antinori who produces Guado Al Tasso in Bolgheri, said "I have never seen such high-quality grapes in my life in Bolgheri,"; "The young wines are very rich in fruit and tannins. It may be the best we ever made." This was reiterated by James Suckling, who reported that the vintage was particularly good in the coastal regions of Bolgheri and Suvereto, which was reflected in the brilliance of the "Super Tuscan" wines such as Ornellaia and Sassicaia.
