Lot Essay

Gioacchino Barbèri (d. 1857), nephew of famed mosaicist, Michelangelo Barbèri, established a workshop near the Spanish Steps in Rome at 99 Piazza di Spagna. Similar to other recorded works, it is very likely that the present subject was inspired by Claude Lorraine's pastoral landscapes.
