In 1860 Napoleon III instituted agricultural competitions to foster growth in France's most important industry, a tradition that continued until the First World War. Christofle produced a number of awards for these competitions, including the present design (see H. Bouilhet, 150 Ans d'Orfèvrerie, 1981, pp. 178-80).
On the present example, the figure of Ceres was designed by sculptor Eugène Capy (d. 1894). The animals, and possibly the reliefs, were designed by Pierre Louis Rouillard (d.1881) (The Second Empire, Philadelphia Museum of Art, 1978, pp.130-131, pl. III-5). Another example of this design, manufactured in 1861, is in the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire, Auger, and is illustrated in V. Alemany-Dessaint, Orfèvrerie Français, 1988, p. 100.
