The following forty-seven lots are part of the collection formed by Colonel and Mrs Harold Aykroyd, which comprises good quality mahogany and walnut furniture reflecting the taste of English post-war collectors. The photographs of Whixley Hall, North Yorkshire, reproduced here, show the interiors circa 1950, during the time of the Aykroyds' ownership. Over the years many purchases were made from dealers in London and Yorkshire, with some of the best pieces being purchased from the excellent Harrogate dealer, Charles Lumb.
Part of the collection will be offered in this sale and the remainder will be included in the sale of Important English Furniture on 8 June 2006. Several pieces seen in the drawing room photograph will be included in that sale, including a George I needlework-covered walnut armchair with lion's head terminals. The highlight of the collection is the George II walnut, mahogany and parcel-gilt dressing bureau-on-stand, formerly in the collection of Percival Griffiths, F.S.A., and purchased by R. W. Symonds, the renowned furniture historian, at Griffiths' sale at Christie's in May 1939.
Mrs Aykroyd left Whixley Hall following the death of her husband in 1974. She died in September 2005.
