18th century Germany consisted of well over 600 principalities and the southern, mostly Catholic, courts endeavoured to rival the grandeur of Versailles. Based on the goût pittoresque of Blondel, Pineau and Meissonnier, exceptionally fine cabinet work was produced in Munich, Würzburg, Bayreuth and Bamberg and this 'Schrank' almost certainly originates from one of these towns.

The beautiful linen-fold effect created by the vertical bands of feather-cut veneers within the simulated cartouche-shaped panels of the doors can probably be further brought back with a gentle wax finish.
