Lot Essay

The table, with writing-surface concealed beneath the folding top, is likely to have been amongst the furniture commissioned for the bedroom apartments at Townley Hall, Co. Louth by Blayney Townley-Balfour (d. 1857) at the time of his marriage in 1797 to Lady Florence Cole. With its elegant herm-tapered legs, it relates to patterns in Thomas Sheraton's, The Cabinet-maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book, 1793 (pls. 43 and 44).
