Each with pierced oval back centred by a patera, above a solid seat and cushion covered in yellow foliate silk damask, on turned tapering legs joined by stretchers, stamped 'SO' (2)

Lot Essay

This pattern of hall chair was illustrated in Gillows of Lancaster and London's Estimate Sketch Book for 1790 (L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, fig. 255). A set of four hall chairs of this pattern, with richly carved backs and central painted medallions, was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 19 March 1987, lot 24.
