Jean Baptiste Pillement (1728-1808) is one of the foremost painters of the rococo. His oeuvre mainly comprises flowers and chinoiseries. He also created engravings of his drawings which were extremely popular throughout Europe such as the "Cahier de cartouches chinois". Such chinoiserie designs appear on one of his most important commissions: in the mid 1760's, he decorated the dining room of Misnovrie castle for Stanislas Auguste Poniatowski, King of Poland, depicting Chinese scenes in European landscapes, to which the present panels relate (A. Gruber et.al., The History of Decorative Arts, Classicism and the Baroque in Europe, Paris, 1992, p. 276).
