Lot Essay

#he doors' reed-edge panel relates to a pair of bedside commodes that was probably supplied to Morton John Davison, Esq. (1778-1841) for Beamish Park, Co. Durham. This pair was attributed to Gillows on the basis of the number of pieces from Beamish which conformed to known Gillow patterns. Twenty-nine lots from Beamish Park (latterly at Bavington Hall, Northumberland), were sold by Mrs. R. D. Shafto, in these Rooms, 21 September 1995, lots 140-178. The pair of bedside commodes was sold as lot 151. The only piece within the group bearing Gillows' stamp was a large pedestal sideboard, lot 172.
