Lot Essay

A pair of similarly 'Roman' fashioned mahogany and satinwood clothes-presses was supplied to Frederick Howard, 5th Earl of Carlisle (d. 1825) for Castle Howard, Yorkshire. They were sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 15 June 2000, lot 115, when they were catalogued as possibly by John Linnell. This was based on the design of another of Castle Howard's richly-figured and inlaid clothes-presses, also of a similar form, and likely to have provided the prototype (H. Hayward & P. Kirkham, William and John Linnell, London, 1980, vol. II, fig. 140).
