Lot Essay

Brassaï donned a traditional kimono of silver and gold brocade to blend in better with the clientele of an upper-class Parisian opium den where he discreetly recorded their quest for euphoria. In the present still life, he included an elegant hand curled over a bared leg, revealing fishnet stockings, as a hint of eroticism and sensuality. Vintage prints from this series, such as the present lot, are very rare. See also lot 276.
