Lot Essay

Vases of this type appear to have been used as decoration in the fireplace, sometimes as part of a garniture, during the idle summer months. These so called 'chimney pots' or schouwstellen are brought to evidence in the designs of Daniel Marot, an example of which can be found, in the engraving of the porcelain and lacquer room from folio 2 of the series Nouvelles Cheminées faites en plusieurs endroits de la Hollande et autres provinces..., see A.M.L.E. Erkelens, Queen Mary's 'Delft porcelain', Paleis het Loo, Zwolle, 1996, ill. p.20.
