The indistinct inscription on the reverse probably indicates that the captain depicted is Cornelis de Houtman (1565-1599). He was a Dutch explorer who discovered a new maritime route from Europe to Indonesia and managed to start the Dutch spice trade. In 1595 he left with two ships, together with his brother, to return in 1597 after a rather disastrous voyage.
