The Rest on the Flight into Egypt

Although Jacob Pynas' oeuvre is not extensive, his style is distinctive, combining the influences of Adam Elsheimer and Carlo Saraceni, which suggests that he may also have travelled to Italy. In 1632, he became a member of the Delft Guild of St. Luke. The subjects of his paintings tended to follow the pre-Rembrandtists in his choice of Old and New Testament stories and mythological themes. This hitherto unrecorded beautifully preserved oil on copper, recalls elements of Elsheimer's Three Marys at the Sepulchre (Bonn, Landesmuseum), especially in the rendering of the trees.
