This painting can be considered a studio version of one of the most successful compositions painted by Cavalier d'Arpino. The prime version is the painting on copper in the Galleria Borghese, Rome, which Dr. Röttgen dates to circa 1596/7 (H. Röttgen, Il Cavalier Giuseppe Cesari D'Arpino. Un grande pittore nello splendore della fama e nell'incostanza della fortuna, Rome, 2002, pp. 308-9, no. 68). Another autograph version is in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Kassel (ibid., p. 310, no. 69).
