Marcel G. Roethlisberger notes that the compositional elements reflect the paintings and prints of Bloemaert from the period of 1599 to 1605 and that the angel is of the type found in his work of c. 1610. He, therefore, considers the painting to be the work of a pupil, datable to c. 1610-1615 (op. cit., p. 370.)
