This painting is one of the many versions of this rather successful composition. Other versions of similar dimensions are in the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum in San Francisco; one sold in these Rooms, 11 June 1971, lot 64; and others in private collections in England (see Robinson, op. cit., pp. 444-6).
