Provenance
Charles Theophilus Metcalfe (1785-1846) was born in Calcutta, son of Thomas Theophilus Metcalfe, major in the Bengal Army, later a director of the East India Company, and created 1st baronet in 1802. His son Charles was educated at Eton and began his career as a diplomat in India in 1802, serving as provisional Governor-General of India from 1833-1836. He later became Governor of Jamaica and Governor of Canada.
