Rectangular, with concave sides, the hinged cover engraved with Arab figures centering monogram AB and within a cast applied border of roses, thistles, shamrocks, and scrolls, the base engraved with an exotic landscape, the sides similarly engraved, the interior with an engraved presentation inscription, marked inside base and cover and on applied border

The inscription reads:
This Gold Box is Presented to Andrew Buchan by the Rhymey Company in testimony of the Estimation in which they held his gratuitous services in Superintending the Farming concerns of the Company 1845

The Rhymey Company, one of the largest iron and steel works in Victorian England, was based in the Rhymey River Valley, a mining district in Monmouthshire, near the Welsh border.
