Lot Essay

Trained at the Düsseldorf Academy by, amongst others, Oswald Achenbach, Herzog travelled widely throughout Europe at an early age, visiting Switzerland, Italy and Norway. Shortly after his first exhibition in Berlin in 1858, two years after the present lot was painted, he moved to Philadelphia in America where he remained for the rest of his life.
