Lot Essay

In the present lot, Verboeckhoven depicts cossacks by a frozen lake, possibly referring to the Russian outpost near the Dutch town of Naarden in the winter of 1813-1814. The French held out there until May 1814 when they were defeated by the cossacks.
In 1826, the year in which the present lot was painted, Verboeckhoven was in England to study the paintings by the British horse painter George Stubbs (1724-1806). The proud horse in the present lot bears testimony to Verboeckhoven's admiration for Stubbs.

We wish to thank Dr Jan de Meere for his kind assistance in cataloguing this lot.
