At the turn of the century Gorter painted Landschap in Drenthe. This was evidently one of Gorters' favourite paintings and he never had the intention to sell it, and photographs from 1930 clearly show it hanging in his own living room. Gorter often worked in Drente when he had just graduated from the academy. Together with fellow painter Frans Deutman (1867-1915), he worked in places such as Zuidlaren, Rolde and Zweelo. In discussing the oeuvre of Gorter the Dutch countryside around Vorden cannot go unmentioned. The Vordense beek is a recurring subject throughout the latter part of his career. The painting Winternamiddag for example shows us its winding streams and snowy banks in winter. PROPERTY OF A DESCENDANT OF THE ARTIST ARNOLD MARC GORTER (1866-1933)
