Lot Essay

The present lot depicts the Hoofdpoort of Rotterdam. Built in 1580, it was an important feature of the port of Rotterdam.
Jongkind's style had matured by about 1860 and, although he did not paint outdoors in oils, he made vivid sketches and watercolours directly from nature, always trying to show exactly what was before him. In 1864, the same year the present lot was painted, his entries in the Salon of Paris were all views on Rotterdam harbour. Although in France, Jongkind often chose Rotterdam and its surroundings as subject matter for his work as these were his most sought after paintings. The present lot is a fine example of his fluent and decisive brushstrokes and the subtle nuance of his pallet.

The authenticity has been confirmed by the Comité Jongkind, The Hague/Paris, following firsthand examination (5 April 2005).

The present lot will be included in the forthcoming supplement to the Catalogue Raisonnè by Brame & Lorenceau, Paris.
