This splendid Newcastle beer coaster wagon is likely to have been commissioned for harvest festivals at Clumber Park, Nottingham, and bears the names of Henry Pelham Alexander Pelham-Clinton, 6th Duke of Newcastle (d. 1879) and his Duchess Henrietta, daughter of Henry Thomas Hope of Deepdene, Surrey, together with that of their eldest son Henry Pelham Archibald Douglas, Earl of Lincoln, later 7th Duke of Newcastle, who was born in 1864.
The coronet-ensigned and Elizabethan style black barrel, displaying the Newcastle heraldic achievements, has a mobile carriage incorporating drinking-cup trays, and is richly carved with voluted scrolls issuing bacchic vines and corn in addition to hops for the brewing of beer. It was made by the Nottinghamshire coach-builder John Castle of Newark.
