Lot Essay

Scottish statesman, James, 3rd Duke of Montrose, was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge, and went on to hold numerous ceremonial and administrative posts, including Master of the Horse, Lord Lieutenant of Stirlingshire, Captain General of the Royal Company of Scottish Archers and Paymaster General. He was awarded a Knight of the Thistle in 1793, later resigning when appointed a Knight of the Garter in 1812.
