The marquetry of the top most probably derives from an engraving in the Louis XIV 'Roman' fashion issued in the oeuvre of Jean Bérain (d. 1711). The specialist inlayer Toussainte Devoye has been proposed as a possible marqueteur for this group of commodes, some of which bear the stamp adopted by Nicolas Sageot (d. 1731) of the faubourg Saint-Antoine following his election as maître in 1706 (P. Grand, 'Le Mobilier Boulle et les ateliers de l'époque', Estampille L'Objet d'Art, 1993, pp. 48 - 70, fig. 16 - 19). A commode with brass background and with tortoiseshell inlay, the reverse of this commode, with identically designed top, was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 1 December 2005, lot 124, and another anonymously, Christie's, New York, 17 - 18 May 2005, lot 510.
