Of Louis XV style, with a sliding serpentine top framed with a three-quarter border, enclosing a central well and a tilting reading stand with a Japanese gilt and black lacquer plaque, the flip side with a gilt-tooled leather writing-surface, flanked by two hinged doors enclosing compartments, one fitted with a sliding ormolu and glass inkstand, on cabriole legs terminating in acanthus-scrolled sabots and wooden castors, stamped underneath each short end

Between 1870 and 1920, Gervais-Maximilien-Eugène Durand (d. circa 1920) is recorded as having worked at 12 rue de la Cerisaie and 62 rue Saint-Antoine, the old hôtel de Sully. Specialising in the manufacture of 18th Century furniture models, the atelier was awarded a silver medal at the 1889 Paris Exposition universelle.
