Comprising eight fauteuils, four chaises and one canapé, the frames with flowerhead-filled guilloche and ribbon-twist bands and red and white silk upholstery with putti among garlands, the fauteuils with oval backs and padded arms above the oval seat on fluted turned tapering legs with egg-and-dart band and foliate caps on toupie feet, some fauteuils numbered in black ink, minor variations in carving and construction

Lot Essay

This suite, with its flowerhead-filled guilloche frame similarly carved, relates to the work of Jean-Baptiste Sené, maître in 1769. Several suites by Sené are recorded, including two at the Petit Trianon, Versailles (P. Kjellberg, Le mobilier français du XVIIIe siècle, Paris, 1989, pp. 810 and 818), while a related pair of fauteuils was sold anonymously, Christie's, New York, 17 - 18 May 2005, lot 252.
