Inlaid overall with foliate scrolls, the foliate ormolu dial with white enamel Roman and Arabic chapters, the center signed 'Augustin Fortin a Paris', blued steel hands, the twin spring barrel movement with silk suspended pendulum and verge escapement, calibrated countwheel strike on a bell and repeat signature to the backplate, the case surmounted by a pierced foliate and C-scroll finial, above two pierced foliate red silk-backed panels with floral frames and the floral and C-scroll boss, previously probably with further finial, regilt

Lot Essay

Augustin Fortin, maître horloger in 1726.

Fortin was appointed garde-visiteur of the clockmaker's guild, responsible for the maintenance of standards of the members of the guild. His clients included the maréchal de Cossé-Brissac, the comte de Mailly and the marquise de Crussol.
