Watches have been introduced into the Far East about 1600 by merchants and missionaries but have doubtlessly been known even earlier in India, where they had been for a long time an important commodity.

Timepieces made for the Indian Market usually featured Swiss movements with every conceivable complication and were retailed by renowned companies such as Marcks & Co.
