Lot Essay

Accompanied by Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present watch with two-tone silvered dial and raised steel Breguet numerals in 1941 and its subsequent sale on 22 November 1941.

This watch has never been offered in public before and is thought to be one of only 12 examples of this reference in stainless steel known to date, out of which only three were fitted with a two-tone dial and Breguet numerals.

This watch bears a reference number, 530, usually reserved for the renowned oversized chronograph wristwatch (see lot 303 in this auction), introduced into the market in 1938. However, research resulted in the discovery of the fact that reference 530 was used not just for the chronograph but also for a plain model without any complications. Whereas the present watch very much resembles a traditional reference 570, close examination shows differences in case proportions such as a larger diameter of 36.5 mm.

Examples of a "time only" reference 530 in stainless steel with two-tone silvered dial and applied Breguet numerals, confirmed by the Extract, are extremely rare. Under a certain angle and light, the extremely charismatic dial of the watch obtains a warm salmon-coloured shade to the chapter ring. Another example of such a dial, on the less exotic reference 570 though, is illustrated in Patek Philippe - Wristwatches by Martin Huber & Alan Banbery, second edition, p. 169.
The celebrated model with its charismatic dial served as inspiration for the creation of the platinum Calatrava model, reference 5169P.
