The designation for Lange's self-winding movements, SAX-0-MAT, stands for "Saxony", the firm's state of origin; "0" is the numeral zero and signifies the zero-reset time-setting mechanism and "MAT" stands for automatic.

Lange's patended "zero-reset" mechanism simplifies the synchronization of the watch with a time signal. When the crown is pullet out, it automatically causes the seconds hand to jump to the 12 o'clock or "zero" position.
