Lot Essay

George Graham (c1674-1751), clockmaker, inventor and member of the Royal Society, was partner of the influential English clockmaker Thomas Tompion during the last few years of Tompion's life.

Graham is credited with the invention of several design improvements to the pendulum clock, the cylinder escapement, the mercury pendulum and also the orrery. He is buried in the same tomb in Westminster Abbey as his friend and mentor Tompion.

For an illustration of Graham's cylinder escapement see Watches by Cecil Clutton and George Daniels, 1965 edition, pl. 23.
