With gilt-finished three quarter plate fully jewelled two train lever movement, bimetallic compensation balance, screwed gold chatons, minute repeating and en passant striking on two polished steel hammers onto a gong, gold cuvette, the white enamel dial with Turkish numerals, outer Arabic five minute divisions, blued steel spade hands, four subsidiary dials indicating date combined with leap year indicator, day, date and phases of the moon combined with lunar calendar and constant seconds, in large circular case with finely engraved scroll and foliage decoration, the reverse centred by a circular blank cartouche with engraved crescent, repeating button in the band, chronograph functions operated through a button in the crown, Quarters Only/Hours & Quarters and Silent/Striking levers underneath the bezel, case stamped AB and numbered, pendant stamped F.T. for Fred Thoms, movement signed Baume London

Lot Essay

Baume & Cie. was founded in 1834 in Les Bois by Louis Victor and Pierre Joseph Célestin Baume as "Baume Frères". The firm specialized in the production of English-style watches and contributed to the development of watchmaking in Le Bois.

In 1844 Baume Frères opened a branch in London, first under the name of Baume Brothers and then Baume & Co. The firm participated at various exhibitions and won numerous awards. They also became the marketing agent for Longines in England.

The pendant of the present watch is stamped F.T. for Fred Thoms, renowned for his exceptional cases which he supplied to the best English watchmakers for their most prestigious pieces.
