Lot Essay

This oil sketch was the modello for a print by the Flemish engraver Coenraet Waumans (Antwerp 1619-after 1675), and was probably a commission from the Antwerp based publisher Joannes Meyssens. The print reproduces a painting from Sir Peter Paul Rubens' studio in the church of Saint John the Baptist in Arras (see J. Bialostocki, 'The Descent from the Cross in works by Peter Paul Rubens and his studio', Art Bulletin, XLVI, 1964, pp. 519-21). Quellinus and other artists from Rubens' circle are known to have made numerous oil sketches for professional printmakers.
