This unusually large survival was probably part of a wall hanging, rather than the upholstery of a bed, which it may have matched. This pattern of embroidery was used internationally, as is witnessed by its various names. Yet another name, in England, was "Irish stitch". The Chastelton House, Oxfordshire, Inventory of 1633 refers thus to a similar stitched hanging (see Jonathan Marsden, "The Chastleton Inventory of 1633", Furniture History Society Journal, 2000, pp. 23-42).
