Lot Essay

The rectilinear form and decoration on the present pair of pedestals have close affinities with the Regency style promoted by Thomas Hope in Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807, and the Empire designs of theirFrench counterparts Charles Percier and Pierre-Francois-Léonard Fontaine (C. Percier and P. Fontaine, Recueil de Décorations Intérieurs, 1801).

Interesting parallels can be found in the furniture and detailing of the architecture at Dodington Park, Gloucestershire built by James Wyatt between 1797 and 1817 (see Christopher Hussey, English Country Houses, Late Georgian, 1800-1840, 1958, p.41-54). In particular close comparison can be made with the door architrave in the dining room at Dodington Park (illustrated op. cit., fig.85).
