Lot Essay

Fauna and flora of the Indian sub-continent were recorded for scientific reasons by the English in India. All manner of linguistic, archaeological and botanical enquiry was set in train by the Asiatic Society of Bengal, of which Sir William Jones was the leading light. Sir Elijah Impey, Chief Justice of Bengal until 1782, employed Indian artists, together with his wife, to record for their, subsequently famous, albums, portraits of birds and plants.
