Lot Essay

The style of long-stemmed leafy plants comes originally from Indian chintzes. The designs were taken up by English crewel work of the late-17th century. These panels are close to early-18th century work, but the latter has differences both in the drawing, and colours used, from these "Arts and Crafts" period hangings.

An example of crewel work of this period was in a recent exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum, an embroidered hanging, The Owls, wool on linen, by Mary Newill, c. 1905-08, from the collection in the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (see the catalogue of the exhibition, International Arts and Crafts, eds. Karen Livingstone and Linda Parry, 2005, fig. 2.19, p. 57).
