The shape of these vases, the Vase Cornet, was designed by Jules Peyre in 1856. It is very probable that these vases are the 2 vases Cornet de 60 [cm] fond sous émail fleurs de scabieuses et marguerites en pâte filets dor, which were entered at Sèvres, priced at 700 francs each, in March 1867 (Registre Vv 7, folio 55, no. 80). These vases were sold to a Monsieur Chamberlain on 24th July 1869 (Registre Vz 12, folio 120 verso). We are very grateful to Tamara Préaud for this information.
They are an interesting example of the fashion for 'Japonisme' of the third quarter of the 19th century. The shape derives from that of late-17th century Japanese beakers, the decoration, in the technique brought to its summit in the work of Louis-Marc Solon (who introduced it to Minton in Staffordshire), is itself in Japanese-inspired taste.
