This is a City Lands Mark for the Ward of Farringdon Without and would have been affixed onto property on the south-east side of The Old Bailey, probably near its junction with Ludgate Hill.
In December 1740 The City Lands Committee ordered that marks should be set up by order of the City Lands Committee on City Lands Property. Designed by Mr. Walker in 1738, these marks are described as having the City arms within a decorative frame above an abbreviation of the ward in which the property was situated and a running number. This description certainly appears to coincide with this example as FARex is an abbreviation of Farringdon Extra.
