Lot Essay

This Roman medallion pier-glass decked with urns relates to Thomas Chippendale's 1760 Glass Frame patterns in The Gentleman and Cabinet-Makers Director, 3rd ed. 1762, (pl. 172). It relates closely, although lacking ho ho birds on either side of the basket finial, to a pier-glass which was acquired after 1951 for Cannon Hall, Yorkshire by the County Borough of Barnsley ("Cannon Hall", Guide Book, c.1970, pl.12).
