Lot Essay

Designed in the restrained "Grecian" taste promoted by Sir John Soane, these bookcases, with Grecian-stepped cornice, have pilaster-trusses wrapped in Apollo palms as featured in a watercolour design dated from around 1820 in the Gillow archives at the Victoria & Albert Museum. The bookcase's beautiful panels of flame-figured mahogany are also typical of Gillow manufacture of the period.
