Lot Essay

Although it resembles fruitwood, the unusual timber employed has been identified as satinwood, a fact testified to by its its sheer density.

Ronald A. Lee joined his father's antique firm in 1931. The firm, known as H.M. Lee and Sons, was a prominent supplier of fine antiques and works of art to collectors and museums. After the Second World War, Ronald and his brother Morton set up their own business; Ronald dealing primarily in English Furniture, clocks and works of art, whilst his brother dealt in French Furniture. Ronald initially worked from home and bought fine period houses in which to display his stock. In 1964 he bought The Manor House, Byfleet and from this date until his death he arranged his growing private collection.
